Who Speaks for the Damned by CS Harris – review

Thoroughly enjoyable!

I had read a few early titles in the Sebastian St. Cyr series by CS Harris, and liked them. So I was happy to receive an advance review copy of the latest title in the series, Who Speaks for the Damned, in exchange for my honest review. And, it turns out that I really enjoyed this book, much more than I expected based on the somewhat generic fondness I remembered for the earlier titles.

Harris’s writing flows smoothly and pulled me along, so that I ended up reading this late into the night, and finishing it the next morning. The main story revolves around Nicholas Hayes, who had been transported to Australia and supposedly died there. Now, however, Hayes is back, very much alive, and a bunch of old questions get re-opened. So when he is later found murdered, there are plenty of suspects. Harris creates quite a puzzler of a plot, with some twists-and-turns that I don’t want to describe (no spoilers), but that make for a couple of nice surprises. In the end, of course, St. Cyr and his cohorts wrap everything up okay, but along the way this story also tugs at your heartstrings in a few places. So if you are prone to shedding tears while reading, you may want to have a tissue handy!

The previous books I had read in this series were so long ago that for me, reading Who Speaks for the Damned was almost like starting the series fresh. But I didn’t get lost, as can sometimes happen when picking up a series near its end. All-in-all, I really enjoyed this book, and now plan on trying to go back and read some of the books in the middle. Or heck, maybe I’ll just start at the beginning again! And once more, my thanks to Berkley and Edelweiss for the advance review copy.
