John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row is £0.99 at Kindle UK today, January 30, 2021

This is one of Steinbeck’s classics (although that could be said of many of his books) and one of my favorites. I spent a good chunk of my childhood in the Monterey/Carmel/Pacific Grove area, so I like this book even a little bit more than I would anyway – it’s fun to really know the area it’s set in while reading it. (Although East of Eden still is my Steinbeck favorite.) And I remember there used to be a bar on Cannery Row named after Doc Rickett’s lab, which I thought at the time was an inspired name for a bar…

In any case, Cannery Row is part of the UK Kindle Daily Deal today at £0.99, which is a really nice price, and a lot less than in the US. For some reason, with the exception of a collection of some of Steinbeck’s short novels that went on sale briefly in the US a bit more than a year ago, Steinbeck titles in the US are really expensive normally, and even when they go on sale, it’s not much of a sale… So if you want this one, grab it if you can!

  1. Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors, whether he’s writing non-fiction or fiction. These Penguin Modern Classics price drops don’t usually last very long in the UK, so grab it if you want it. (This one is part of the Kindle UK Daily Deal, so probably gone tomorrow.) OTOH, Steinbeck price drops are really really rare in the US, so occasional and short is better than not at all .

  2. I’m a bit of a John Steinbeck fangirl, but I had never heard of The Harvest Gypsies: On the Road to the Grapes of Wrath until it popped up in today’s Kindle US Daily Deal, for $1.99. And it’s matched and discountable at Kobo US – note the “partners” code for 40% off is still working – so if you have a VIP membership and use the code, it’s only $1.07.

Per the blurb, Harvest Gypsies is a collection of seven articles (with accompanying photos) about Dust Bowl migrants that Steinbeck wrote for the San Francisco News. Unfortunately the sample ends while it’s still in the introduction, which was written by Charles Wollenberg, but still, for $1.99 or less, how can you go wrong?

Note that Steinbeck is in the public domain if you are lucky enough to live in or visit Canada or the few other countries with reasonable copyright laws. However this title is pretty obscure, and neither Faded Page nor PG Canada had it when I looked.

  3. The Short Novels of John Steinbeck is $4.99 right now in the US. It’s been cheaper in the past (years ago), but this is still a great price for what you get, always assuming you don’t have too many of them already…

The six included books are: Tortilla Flat, The Moon is Down, Red Pony, Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, and The Pearl.

  4. The Short Novels of John Steinbeck is $1.99 right now in the US. This is as cheap as I’ve ever seen it, so if you didn’t bite back in December at $4.99, I highly recommend you grab it now, even if you only need/want a couple of the books.

The list of books in the collection, and links for Kindle US and Kobo US are in the comment two up from here…
