I love all of the books in the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters, but I love a few of them just a little bit more than the others! Summer of the Danes is one of those, and it’s on sale right now at Kindle US for $2.99. It’s towards the end of the series, so you might want to start with the earlier titles, but I think it would also do pretty well as a stand-alone. (Although it’s a little hard for me to tell, because I’ve read and re-read all of the books in the series, many more than once…)
And if you like it, one nice thing about getting hooked on this series is that the titles are all published in the US by Open Road/Mysterious Press, which means they go on sale a lot, usually for $1.99 or $2.99. (And they are discountable at Kobo US.) So if you really like the series, and are a little patient, it won’t be expensive to read them all! Keep an eye out here, and I’ll try to post the price drops in the comments, although there are a lot of them to keep up with. Oh yeah, and my other love-just-a-little-more titles include the first two books: A Morbid Taste for Bones and One Corpse Too Many, and two of the later titles: The Virgin in the Ice and Brother Cadfael’s Penance.

And now here’s another of my favorites in this series on sale! One Corpse Too Many is $1.99 at Kindle US, although not on sale at Kobo US, at least as of now. This is an Open Road/Mysterious Press title, which means it probably won’t be on sale for very long, but will be on sale again pretty often. So if you miss this time, keep an eye out here, and I’ll post when I see it again.
