Review of Chaos Reigning by Jessie Mihalik

A fun series finale…

I’ve enjoyed each of the previous two books (see my reviews here and here) in Jessie Mihalik’s Consortium Rebellion series, and to avoid creating any suspense, I really liked Chaos Reigning too.   I found it just a little bit slow to get started, but pretty soon the action got going, and I was immersed again in Mihalik’s deft blend of space opera and romance.

The previous two titles told the stories of Catarina’s two older sisters and her conniving (and maybe worse) parents.  Now Cat has her own story, and it’s quite a story.    She’s trying to save her family and the Consortium from doom, while also having to pose as a couple with a hunky guy from one of the older books.  And she’s simultaneously trying to hide a few secrets of her own.   What could possibly go wrong?   Just about everything, and so we have a great time hopping around the universe from adventure to adventure, before finally wrapping it all up at the end.

I was really happy to see more of the truly evil, but villainously fun, Silva Syndicate, and to see a bit more of Cat’s brothers, and best friend Ying Yamado.   Although, per her blog, Mihalik is already part way through another series (Starlight’s Shadow), I’m hoping there is a follow-on series somewhere in the Consortium Rebellion cast of characters too!

All-in-all, I very much enjoyed Chaos Reigning (I don’t give many 5-star ratings), and I imagine I’ll be binge (re)reading the whole series in order sometime soon.   And I want to thank both Harper Voyager and Edelweiss for the review copy.

  2. Chaos Reigning is $1.99 again in the US and Canada today, possibly ??? in honor of Jessie Mihalik’s new book, Hunt the Stars, which is due out Feb 1. The links in the OP are still good.

BTW, Hunt the Stars is the first in Mihalik’s new Starlight’s Shadow series and she has the first couple of chapters up on her website right now. I liked them a lot.
